World Hunger Day 2016

35th World Hunger Day 2016 Yard Sale

SAVE THE DATE:  SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Plans are well underway but we need volunteers with serving hearts to make this special event a success.  Department heads, sorters, furniture pickup teams, and many others are needed.

What is it?

It is North Mecklenburg's biggest yard sale!  It all started in 1982 when a men's prayer group from First Baptist Church felt God's call to feed the hungry around the world.  The first year, a yard sale on the church grounds raised more than $1,000 for the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund.  Since then, World Hunger Day has grown to include a huge yard sale, NC BBQ, silent and live auctions, bake sale, and entertainment.  All money raised goes to feeding the hungry in North Carolina, the US, and Haiti.

In 1982, a small men's prayer breakfast group from First Baptist Church felt God's call to feed the hungry around the world. That first year, a yard sale on the church grounds raised more than $1,000 for the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund. Since then, World Hunger Day at FBC-H has grown to include a huge bazaar, hot dogs, concessions, bake sale, silent auction, and live auction. The event has become not only an opportunity to raise funds to help support the needy, but also a wonderful example of outreach and sharing God's love in our own neighborhood and across the world.

At the end of 2009, funds totaling more than $750,000 were raised to benefit the local Loaves & Fishes Pantry and the Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen, as well as international assistance to Haiti.

Each year beginning in August, friends and members of FBC-H begin preparations for World Hunger Day. Two or three tractor trailers will be filled with donations of clothes, tools, books, furniture, toys, bikes and appliances to be sold in the bazaar.

The day before WH Day, the campus will come alive with activity as people prepare for the gigantic bazaar. The gymnasium of the Family Life Center will be turned into an area for a silent auction and bake sale. Hot dogs and drinks are sold and served up in the kitchen. A live auction is held at a later date usually in October.

Hundreds of people working for Christ will make WH Day possible. Literally thousands of lives will be touched by the blessings of this ministry.

You can get involved by volunteering your time and talents, giving gifts of money and goods, and giving your prayer support. Call the church office at 704-875-6581 to learn how you too can get involved.
